Create a Windows 8.1 USB Recovery Drive

A USB recovery drive one of a number of option for recovering from system problems with Windows 8.1.  The advantage of having a USB recovery drive is  that you can use it to recover your system even if Windows 8.1 will not boot. Microsoft has included a tool to create a USB recovery drive, built into Windows 8.1.  Before we get into creating and using a USB recovery drive, there are a few things you need to be aware of:

  1. You need to have at least an 8GB USB flash drive
  2. The recovery drive tool will wipe any data you had on the flash drive before it builds the recovery drive.
  3. You will need to know the Administrator password in order to create the recovery drive.

Create a USB Recovery Drive

  1. From the Metro User Interface, swipe the right edge of the screen and select Search.
  2. Enter recovery drive in the search box, and select Create a recovery drive. (You may be asked for the administrative password.  If your PC doesn’t have a recovery partition, then the Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive checkbox is grayed out and the recovery drive will include only the recovery tools and a bootable image, but not a recovery image to use for refreshing or resetting your PC.)

  1. Select the USB flash drive, click Next
