Recommended Websites: Free Online Academic Classes and Lectures
One of the greatest benefits of the Internet is that it makes knowledge that at one time was restricted to academic institutions available to anyone with Internet access and a browser. This is a short list of academic websites I like to visit when ever I am in the mood to expand my knowledge and explore different academic disciplines. This list will grow and change over the next few weeks. If you would like to be notified when this page is updated, use the form below to subscribe to this post. I promise, no spam!
Wi-Fi Analyzer App for Android
Whether you are a home user troubleshooting wireless connectivity issues in your home, or a mobile user just looking for a good public wireless signal, the Wi-Fi Analyzer for Android is a great tool to have; and it’s free!
Wi-Fi Analyzer does more than just show you what wireless access points (WAP’s) are nearby, much more.
Wi-Fi Analyzer will show you the channels of the nearby wireless networks, and show you where those channels are overlapping. This is great if you live in an area where there are many WAP’s nearby, and you are experiencing connectivity issues because of overlapping signals.
Boycott SOPA Supporters with Andriod App
Consumers now have a new tool in the fight against SOPA, the disastrous Stop Online Piracy Act currently making it’s way through Congress. SOPA has many supporters in the music and movie industries, as well as other companies in media and legal professions, and they are lobbying Congress for support to pass the SOPA act and make it a law.
The problem with SOPA is that it gives a lot of power to media companies and Intellectual Property copyright owners to go after any one they deem might be in violation of intellectual property and copyright laws, but provides very weak abilities to actually do anything about stopping piracy.
Google to go Nuclear against SOPA
Things could get interesting if congress doesn’t get the message that we don’t want SOPA. If they didn’t get the message after some 37,000 domains left GoDaddy in protest of their support for SOPA, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter might be able to get the message across by simultaneously shutting down their services. So far, there is no actual plan to shut down these services in protest, but there is talk.
Frankly, this might not be a bad idea. If they do decide to shut down, I hope they do it for a 24 hour period. that should get everyone’s attention. Can you imaging the impact this would have on the United States? Not to mention, the rest of the world.
Net Neutrality goes into affect November 20, 2011
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has published its net neutrality rules with the Federal Register, preventing Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) from deliberately throttling network traffic based on based on applications or services being accessed. Verizon and Metro PCS sued to stop net neutrality from going into effect, but both lost in court.
The Republicans in Congress are also outspoken critics against net neutrality, and may attempt to appeal the FCC regulations. The laws do little more than mandate what was already considered the status quo. Most consumers already assume that they will be getting the same internet connection regardless of what site they are visiting or what application they are using.

Seattle Businesses hacked because of inadequate protection
Recently, the wireless networks of 53 Seattle businesses were infiltrated by three hackers using a variety of methods ranging from techniques like wardriving ( actually going around scouting out wireless networks with weak security) to physically breaking into some of the businesses and stealing computer equipment and using it to gain access into the networks and collect data. Most of these businesses have one thing in common that made them attractive targets for these thieves, inadequate security in their network and infrastructure.
Google Wallet Launches Today
I myself am not a fan of smart phone technology for two reasons, security and privacy. So, I won’t be subscribing to Google Wallet anytime soon. But if you feel comfortable with the idea of storing your credit card information on your smart phone, you may like Google Wallet.
“Google Wallet has been designed for an open commerce ecosystem. It will eventually hold many if not all of the cards you keep in your leather wallet today. And because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will be able to do more than a regular wallet ever could, like storing thousands of payment cards and Google Offers but without the bulk. Eventually your loyalty cards, gift cards, receipts, boarding passes, tickets, even your keys will be seamlessly synced to your Google Wallet. And every offer and loyalty point will be redeemed automatically with a single tap via NFC. ”
