Windows XP: Start Menu Delay

By default, Windows XP has a delay that I find personally irritating when going through the sub-menus of the Start Menu. Luckily, this can easily be adjusted to fit your preference.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Start> Run, then type in: regedit Press [Enter] on your keyboard.
  2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay
  3. By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value (like 0) to speed it up.
  4. If your still experiencing a slow speed of the Start Menu, even after editing the registry setting, then you might try the following:

Navigate to Display Properties> Appearance> Advanced

Turn off the option titled Show menu shadow.

You should see a notable increase in performance. If not, take a look at your system resources to see if you can find a performance bottleneck.
